Typing lessons for 2011.
I bring this up because typing has been one of those things where in High School we were subjected to the asdf jkl; Bela Karole typing teacher. Correction our class was called word processing. We would spend all time learning to properly type and embed a muscle memory that even 20 years later, when placing my fingers on my laptop, without much thought, words appear on screen without much of a actual glance at the keys.
Why am I talking about typing? In today's world we type using all types of keyboard variations. What is not acceptable on one device may be on another. When SMS texting started the keypad was was the same as your home phone or as we now call it land-line. To compose a word you would use a series of taps. While I was not advanced in my tap skills, I was a decent texter. Then came the Palm Treo, and the qwerty keypad. I however did not adopt into the qwerty until much later when I had to at my job. I will say texting was easier but what I had done with one hand now requires two. My loop-hole in all of this? The BlackBerry Pearl. I was obligated to use a BlackBerry but not obliged to deal with the two thumb typing. To spell words on the keypad much like a basic cellphone, your letters are determined by tapping either single or double. After quitting my last BlackBerry required place of employment. I gave into the qwerty keyboard. My two thumbs pound the keys by my own accord.
So now that I've laid out the groundwork for my new ramble, I will now seg-way to the my use of touchscreen devices. I had a Nokia tablet and used a stylus pen to do much of my navigation and typing. But now I've become an iPod touch and iPad user, which has challenged me to yet another method of imputing. While the touch works best with the index finger, the iPad sorta sends you on a bi-polar experience of switching from your single index finger to both your thumbs, to the classic typewriter position. I personally use the index and two thumb method in portrait mode. Thanks to the corrective text dictionary, most of my imputing errors have been avoided. However, touching glass does not help your fingers learn muscle memory, because your working with a flat surface.
While I love my iPad for all my web and social media enjoyment, I can't give into to using a touch screen for my cellphone. My iPad works well for me to get through my day without having to lug around my heavy, corded, and hot laptop. I'm wondering if I can actually start blogging with it. I really should get version 2, the camera will definitely change the way I can post pics and messages.
If typing were a language, I can speak 6 languages. Just don't tell my typing teacher we use our thumbs type keys. Our thumbs were only suppose to be used for the spacebar. Hahaha
